   Concrete Driveways is the unpretentious name of Drew Kaufman's business, and the straightforwardness of the name reflects his attitude toward it.

   "I try to treat everyone the same -- fairly and honestly, he says.  "I'll tell them what I'll do, and how much it'll cost – even if they don't like it.  Then I'll do what I said I would do."

   Kaufman came up the old-school way in California, where he lived on his own from the age of 17.  He began pushing a wheelbarrow at 18, working for a company laying brick, and soon had people asking him to do patio work on the side. He went out on his own, and he's thrived for 27 years now.

   Tiring of California, though the money was certainly good, he came to Nashville because of all the activity here. (He has another concrete business in Daytona Beach.) He works directly with homeowners, bypassing contractors whenever possible.

   "I spoil customers," he says.  "I always come in on schedule.  I give them service they never get."

   In addition to driveways, Kaufman does sidewalks, patios, stained and overlay concrete work, custom and brick inlays, and resurfacing and installation of pool decks, to name some.  He does his own setup, tractor work and form setting.  He guarantees all work, and his confidence level is so high that he asks for no down payment, collecting only when the job is done.

   "I've never had a customer I couldn't please," he avers, "although I've had some rough ones.  I give them more than they ask for."

   Kaufman's sales technique is to use no sales technique at all.

   "I tell people I might be one-third or one-half more than anyone else," he says.  "But I tell them they'll never want to take my stuff out.  When I walk away, it'll be done right.  If it's not, they don't pay."
